Pet Portraits and Other Paintings by
Carol Matsuyama

Carol Matsuyama (née Dougall) was born in England and moved to Canada with her family when she was just a baby. She grew up in Scarborough, Ontario. Since getting married she has lived in Montreal, Louisville and New York, finally returning to Canada in 1999.

Carol has always enjoyed drawing and painting. She was inspired as a child by her father who painted in watercolours and oils, and the family talent continues through her daughter, Melanie, a mixed media artist and sculptor.

Carol studied Fine Arts in New York, majoring in Graphic Design and graduating with a BFA summa cum laude, before becoming a Children’s Educational Book Designer for over twenty years. Recently she has picked up her brushes again and started painting pet portraits from photos, as well as other subjects, in acrylics. She paints in a representational style, and while her subject matter may seem varied, she paints the world that surrounds her, including the people and places of Durham, the flowers in her garden, and memories of her travels to Japan.

Now homesteading with her husband on five acres in Port Perry, Ontario, Canada, Carol is a member of the Port Perry Artists’ Association, the Oshawa Art Association and the Scugog Council For the Arts. Carol’s art has been in juried shows and hung in local galleries, including the Robert McLaughlin Gallery in Oshawa. You can find her art in private collections in Canada, the United States, and Japan.
